About Hamsters

Hamsters are mammals that belong to the rodent family possessing large incisor teeth which are continually growing necessitating gnawing to avoid the teeth from overgrowing. The word ‘rodent’ comes from the latin word ‘rodere’ meaning ‘to gnaw’.

Hamsters form the Family Cricetidae which happens to be broken down into various Genera (including Cricetulus, Phodopus as well as Calomyscus). Inside each Genera are several species of hamster. There are various species of hamsters around the world and most hamsters inhabit semi-desert regions where they live in burrows. These burrows contain many tunnels and separate chambers including chambers where the hamster will store meals and rest. Hamsters are nocturnal, resting throughout the hot days and waking during the cooler evenings. They’ve got very poor eyesight but a keen sense of smell and outstanding hearing.

Most species of hamsters have expandable cheek pouches where they are able to carry food and bedding back to their burrow where they can store food. The word ‘hamster’ originates from the German word ‘hamstern’ meaning ‘to hoard’.

Only a few hamster species are widely kept as pets but the hamster is the most popular of the smaller rodents kept as a pet in many countries today.

Is the bite of Siberian hamster harmful or poisonous?

How do we treat such bites?

Did you buy it for good and clean pet shop? -usually should not be a risk
tetanus should always be, just in case
treated as a small bite – clean and patch

Wear gloves and tame your hamter little by little, soon you can handle it without gloves.
